Dear Friends,
Most importantly, we hope you and your families are healthy. This has been a difficult year in many respects. Like everyone, we sincerely wish for better days to come. As Thanksgiving in the United States approaches, we would like to take a moment to reach out in gratitude to each of you who has helped our Foundation grow — with support, in-kind donations, and financial contributions. Thank you to the many people who have helped us preserve Hemingway’s legacy in Cuba.
Despite the difficult economic situation in Cuba, our architectural and document conservation teams continue their consultation at Finca Vigía.
Both groups have been on-site as well as consulted remotely this year. The technical team has been instrumental in the repairs of the HVAC system within the archival vault in the Restoration Center. Without adequate dehumidification and air conditioning, the delicate Hemingway papers stored within were once again in danger of demise.
Workforce development and training for Cuban specialists are key components of our work. When any US team works at the Finca, we are joined by Cuban specialists. Our time in Cuba is limited, but the knowledge that is shared benefits all.
In September 2023, our chief document conservator traveled to Havana to examine the papers, photographs, maps, and books stored in the archival vault. He was prepared to offer treatment plans if mold or mildew was noticed. Wonderful news: he determined that the documents were in excellent condition. All involved breathed a collective sigh of relief.
We are proud of the strong relationships we have been able to build with Cuban and US officials to move the project forward even during challenging times.
Our mission can only be done with your help. Sincere thanks to each and everyone.
With warm regards and gratitude,
Mary-Jo Adams
Executive Director
