Eight members of the US Technical Team returned December 16th from a successful week working on the Restoration Center at Finca Vigia. The highly specialized group was composed of electrical and mechanical engineers, architects, construction specialists, and a document conservator.

Progress has advanced significantly this fall. On the December trip, the HVAC system was mounted, and the electrical system was installed. Cheers in English and Spanish erupted when the power was turned on. There were hugs, high fives, and smiles from all who had worked so hard for this day.

Our colleagues in Cuba are excellent. The construction continues in our absence. In November the Cuban team laid tile to create beautiful floors and walls in both the laboratory areas and in the archival storage vault. They completed the rough wiring, water lines and plumbing, attached louvered windows in the basement, and created important drainage trenches.

The pride of all involved in this unprecedented international project is evident. We are confident Ernest Hemingway would appreciate the effort and take pleasure in the cross-cultural collaboration underway at his Havana home.
